A dental implant is a permanent tooth replacement option that looks and feels just like a natural tooth. Because it becomes a permanent fixture in the mouth, patients can feel comfortable in everyday life without worrying about it shifting or moving like a partial might.
How do dental implants work?
An implant is an artificial tooth root that is made of titanium and placed into the jaw to hold a replacement tooth. The titanium root fuses with the bone and becomes a solid anchor for the new tooth. Dental implants may be an option for people who have lost a tooth, or multiple teeth, due to periodontal disease, an injury or some other reason.

From start to finish, the process of creating an implant takes months. While it may seem like a long time, implants are a wonderful long-term, effective option for tooth replacement - well worth the wait. After the tooth is extracted and bone graft placed, if necessary, the bone and tissue must heal for about three months. Once healed, the implant can be placed. The titanium screw is surgically placed into the jawbone, leaving a healing cap exposed outside of the tissue. This also needs to heal for several months, allowing time for the implant to fuse to the bone. Finally, a crown can be attached to a post on the implant for a brand new tooth! Implants look and feel so natural that patients may even forget they ever lost a tooth in the first place.

Are you a candidate for a dental implant?
The ideal candidate for a dental implant is in good general and oral health. Adequate bone in the jaw is needed to support the implant, and the best candidates have healthy gum tissues that are free of periodontal disease. Oftentimes, after a tooth has been extracted, a bone graft might be needed to increase bone level and density. When done right after the extraction, bone grafting is a very simple procedure that yields great results.
